AODD Pump Check Balls

AODD Pump Check Balls

Bonzer Marketeers supplies OEM-compatible check balls for AODD pumps in SS316, PTFE, Buna-N, EPDM, Santoprene and more - for Wilden, ARO, Yamada, Sandpiper and 12+ brands. Serving industries across India from Vadodara, Gujarat.

What Are Check Balls in an AODD Pump?

In an Air Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) pump, check balls - also called valve balls - are the wet-side components that control the direction of fluid flow through the pump. Four check balls are arranged in pairs at the inlet and outlet of each diaphragm chamber. As each diaphragm strokes inward, the inlet ball lifts and fluid is drawn in; as it strokes outward, the outlet ball lifts and fluid is pushed out toward the discharge port.

Together with the valve seats they seal against, check balls determine whether your pump can self-prime, maintain discharge pressure and achieve rated flow. They are among the highest-wear components on the wet side of any AODD pump, since every stroke cycles the ball against its seat under full process pressure.

Choosing the correct ball material for your specific fluid, temperature and solids loading is critical. The wrong material leads to swelling, chemical attack, premature wear and loss of seal — all resulting in reduced capacity, loss of prime, or reverse flow during idle strokes.

Check Ball Materials We Supply

Bonzer Marketeers stocks check balls in all standard elastomers and hard materials used across AODD pump brands. Select the right material based on your process fluid, temperature range and any regulatory requirements (e.g. food-grade or pharmaceutical compliance).

  1. Buna-N (NBR / Nitrile)

Best for petroleum-based fluids — fuel oils, hydraulic oils, mineral oils, kerosene and lubricants. Widely used in oil & gas, automotive and machinery industries.

  1. EPDM (Nordel)

Excellent for dilute acids, caustics, water-based fluids and low-temperature applications. Common in water treatment, chemical dosing and food/beverage lines.

  1. PTFE (Teflon)

The most chemically resistant option. Handles highly aggressive acids (HCl, Hâ‚‚SOâ‚„), chlorinated solvents, ketones and acetates. Preferred in pharma, semiconductor and chemical processing.

  1. FKM (Viton)

Superior resistance to heat (up to 200°C) and aggressive chemicals including aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated compounds and concentrated acids. Used in high-temperature process lines.

  1. Santoprene (TPE)

A cost-effective alternative to PTFE for many acidic and caustic applications. Excellent abrasion resistance and durability. Well-suited for slurry, paint and coating applications.

  1. Neoprene (CR)

General-purpose elastomer for water-based slurries, mild chemicals, sea water and non-aggressive process fluids. Good flex life and low cost — ideal for general industrial duties.

  1. Geolast

High oil resistance that matches or exceeds Buna-N. An excellent alternative in petroleum and oilfield applications where both chemical resistance and abrasion resistance are needed.

  1. SS 316 (Stainless Steel)

Preferred where hygienic cleaning (CIP) is needed or where elastomers risk leaching into the product. Used in food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical applications.

We also serve buyers in ceramics & mining, textiles, printing & inks, pulp & paper, automotive, semiconductor manufacturing, adhesives & glues and steel & metal processing. Whatever your industry, Bonzer Marketeers can match the right check ball material and size to your pump and process requirements.

Signs Your Check Balls Need Replacing

Check ball wear is gradual but the effects on pump performance are immediate once the seal breaks down. Watch for these warning signs:

Loss of prime or pump won't self-prime

Worn or deformed check balls fail to seat properly, allowing air to bypass and preventing the pump from drawing fluid. Replace check balls and inspect seats.

Backflow during idle strokes

Fluid returning toward the inlet during the pump's idle stroke is a clear sign of a degraded or incorrectly sized check ball that cannot hold against discharge pressure.

Reduced flow rate at same air pressure

If throughput has dropped but air consumption is unchanged, check the wet end first. Partially seating check balls are the most common wet-end cause of reduced capacity.

Swollen or deformed balls on inspection

Chemical incompatibility causes elastomer balls to swell, harden, or crack. This is a material selection issue - switch to a chemically compatible grade on replacement.

Excessive pump cycling / rapid short-stroking

When balls and seats no longer seal cleanly, the pump may short-cycle rapidly to compensate for internal slip. This increases wear on diaphragms and air valve components.

FAQ

  1. What is a check ball in an AODD pump?

A check ball is a spherical valve component on the wet side of an AODD pump that controls the direction of fluid flow. Four check balls — two per chamber — open and close with each stroke to allow fluid in through the inlet and out through the discharge, preventing backflow.

  1. How do I choose the right ball material for my pump?

Ball material selection depends on your process fluid, operating temperature and any regulatory requirements. For example, Buna-N suits oil-based fluids, PTFE suits aggressive chemicals, EPDM suits dilute acids and water-based fluids and SS316 suits food-grade or high-hygiene applications. Our team can help confirm compatibility if you share your fluid and temperature details.

  1. Do you supply check balls for Wilden and ARO pumps in India?

Yes. Bonzer Marketeers supplies OEM-compatible check balls for Wilden, ARO, Yamada, Sandpiper, Graco and other leading brands. We serve buyers across India from our base in Vadodara, Gujarat. Contact us with your pump model and size for a quote.

  1. Should I replace balls and seats at the same time?

Yes. Check balls and seats are a matched sealing pair. Fitting new balls on a worn seat — or new seats under worn balls — will not restore a proper seal and shortens the life of the new parts. Always replace both together for best results.

  1. Why is my AODD pump losing prime? Could it be the check balls?

Loss of prime is one of the most common symptoms of worn or chemically degraded check balls. If the balls no longer seat tightly against the valve seats, the pump cannot maintain suction or hold a prime. Inspect the balls for swelling, cracking, or flat spots and replace if any damage is found.

  1. What pump sizes do you stock check balls for?

We stock check balls for common AODD pump sizes ranging from ÂĽ" to 3" across multiple brands and materials. For less common sizes or specific OEM part numbers, contact our team and we will advise on availability and lead time.

  1. Are your check balls food-grade or pharma-grade compliant?

We supply balls in materials suitable for food and pharmaceutical applications, including SS316 and select FDA-compliant elastomers. Please specify your compliance requirement when enquiring so we can confirm the right grade for your application.
